What is Your Why?

It is like clock work around New Years, everyone goes to setting New Years resolutions from losing weight, going back to school. starting a business and others.  It seems most people lose their enthusiam once they face an obstacle.   These stories continue throughout the year but it is less publicized. 

I believe it is an inner desire in each of us to start our own business,  to run the show, be the boss and make all of the decisions.  For this passion, many individuals start their very own MLM business.    It offers the opportunity for the average individual to get involved without an huge upfront investment.  The greatest thing anyone can join a MLM company and the worst thing about a MLM company is anyone can join a MLM company. This is the appealing aspect of network marketing.  

We all have this enthusiam when we first work on a goal in our lives.  The question is why is it that 97% of the people that start a MLM business fail.  It is quite astonishing to me that so many fail and there had to be some secrets.  I have come to find out that a better question is why didn’t they ask themselves what their why is.

The answer to this question is that if your reason for reaching that goal is not strong enough, your “why”, your chances to accomplish this goal is reduced.   Truth be told is that there is a why for everything we do in life.  For example, if you have strong beliefs that a particular college is the best , you have reasons to make up your belief.  This is your why.  

Seems like a strange question doesn’t it?    However, the truth is that there is a reason or a why for everything that we do.  There are countless motivations for doing any number of things and that is what is at the heart of that thing you do.  For example, if you prefer a certain restaurant and you are quite vocal with your praise, you have a reason for doing so.  This is your why.  Another example would be why you donate to charities, why you’ve decided to become a network marketer and the list goes on.

Think about all the things that you devote your time too.  Are any of them not living up to the standards you hoped for?  I’m willing to bet that its because you haven’t figured out what your why is for that particular thing.

When I first got into network marketing, some trusted friends were talking about joining a network marketing company, and eventually did join in.  My good friend, Mike said come to a meeting and because of our friendship, we joined.  I knew the costs of starting a business and knew that even though starting a business the network marketing way, it would still have its own unique costs.  This was all clear to me, but after the first month I realized that I didn’t really know why I was doing it.  What drew me to network marketing as opposed to any of the other opportunities that were out there.  I began to think on this and realized that I wanted 3 things most of all.  First I wanted to be my own boss; secondly, I wanted to grow, explore, and try new things (believe me, MLM industry sure expanded your horizons); and lastly, the most important reason I had for getting involved is that I enjoy helping people and building relationships with them.

So if you have a project that you’re working on and its just not moving forward or you’re finding it hard to remain motivated, consider that question: What is your why?

I explore that question quite often and I was told a story about a father and his dedication to his son.  I know what you must be thinking, we are all dedicated to our children.  For this statement, I must agree.  This father had a son born without the ability to walk or talk.  Dick Hoyt son was born with Cerebral Palsy.  He was dedicated to his son and wanted to raise his son like all of his other children and that is exactly what he did.

As his son Rick  grew older, a computer was built that allowed Rick to communicate.  Rick was communicating and he was able to attend high school.  One day Rick learned of a charity 5K race for a paralyzed schoolmate.  This request by his son was taken seriously and he decided to run the race by pushing his son in his wheelchair.  To the astonishment of the crowd, they ran the entire race.  When the Hoyt’s returned home, Dick Hoyt saw the excitement in his son in his ability to participate.

The video below runs about 4 minutes showing the story of the love of the father and a son.  Dick Hoyt has a definite why.  When I saw this video for the first time, it was quite moving.

This father and son team continues to run marathons, triathalons and ironman competitions.   For all competitions, Dick and his son Rick run together.  The great accomplishments running these races fails in comparison to the accomplishment Rick has earned outside of racing.  Rick has been able to achieve graduating from high school, college and is currently living in own apartment. 

This story inspires me to work harder towards all my goals and I have to say what a great man he is to his son!!!!
